Zig Zags and Sugar Cane

We left for San Lucas aound 4:30pm yesterday.  Normally, it would be around 2 hours to drive, but the wet season this year caused a lot of damage to the roadways, and we had to drive extra slow.  In Guatemala, during the wet season, they can get so much rain that the water tears the pavement right off the roads.  We ended up arriving around 7:15pm at our friend Chona's house.  Here are some pictures from the trip.

Lily was so tired during the trip she fell asleep.  My neck hurts just looking at her!
You can see on the side of the road is some tall looking grass.  This is actually sugar cane.  They have fields of sugar cane here kind of like we have fields of corn back home.
If you look to the right, where there used to be sugar cane it looks like a fire happened.  In order to harvest the sugar cane, they need to set the field on fire to seal the sugar inside of the cane so as to collect them both and load them on trucks.
You can see smoke in the distaance rising from teh processing plant where they haul the sugar cane to.
It's kind of hard to see since it became dark, but the road pictured below has pieces of blacktop missing.  This is what caused our trip to take so long.
Lily was so tired after our journey that she fell asleep with one eye open!  SCARY!
After waking this morning, we walked down to the church and mission space and were able to help the women start make our lunch.  We get peas today!
Lily made a new friend in Dr. Chris Wallin.  He comes down here to help with eye care of the local people.  He donates his time in support of the mission.  One of the many amazing people we meet that contribute to helping the people of San Lucas.
Here is a picture of the church.  It's very beautiful, and will serve as our base of operations while we are here in San Lucas.
Here is a monument of Fr. Greg.  He was a huge part of the progression and improvement in the lives of the people of San Lucas, that they erected a memorial of him so that they may spend time in prayer to his intercession.  This is placed just outside of the church.
This is the Biblioteca.  This is where we gather and eat, as well as organize the day's activities.  We will spend time here mostly in the morning and the evening.
That is a quick overview.  We will be leaving to visit some friends, and possibly pick some coffee!  We will check in either tonight or tomorrow morning!
